What Do You think?

  • Richard Henry Pratt, founder of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, is often quoted for his educational motto: “Kill the Indian to save the Man.” Curator Joe Baker, of the Delaware People, revises the famous quote to: “Kill the Indian to save the Child.” What do you think Pratt meant by his comment, and what does Baker’s version express that’s different than the original?
  • How would you react as a Chief and/or parent when confronted with a demand to send your child to this school? Considering all circumstances, what would you have done?
